Artist Statement
Having an ethereal and cinematic effect upon the viewer of my photographs has always been one of my goals as a photographer. I want to somewhat romanticize raw human emotions because of how powerfully beautiful they can be to experience as well as witness. I want my photographs to show that everyone has a life as complex as your own, and my photographs are just a glimpse into that.
My photos are meant to show romanticized vulnerable emotions. Photography is an outlet for me to be vulnerable, and so it feels fitting to have my subjects be portrayed as emotionally vulnerable as well. I believe that romanticizing emotions makes them easier to empathize with. Color is a primary in how I think, and so my photographs have a strong presence of color. I like how color can create a cinematic and ethereal effect on the viewers. I am inspired by Gregory Crewdson’s cinematic settings and photography. The somewhat creepy yet vulnerable mood of Crewdson’s work is something I would like to emulate. Mystery is also a primary aspect within my photographs because I feel as though this encourages mild creepiness while also making it easy to connect with the subject of my photographs. I want my photographs to look and feel like movie stills, and I want viewers to create their own situation for each photograph and each subject. I usually shoot with a general idea of the image I want to cultivate whether it be shapes or colors or even both sometimes. I want to create a similar effect with each photograph, but with different settings, people, and colors. I want my photos to be striking and somewhat elegant in order to romanticize the emotions and subject matter.
