Artist Statement
In horror movies or scary stories, the tiny details that set the scene greatly contribute to what makes the audience uneasy. I have taken many photos trying to figure out what makes them ominous and I really enjoy seeing how unsettling they can become for no single reason. Through this project, I really want to learn more about what kind of things make us feel a little troubled when we see them. I want to experiment with different scenes, lighting, subjects, and editing styles to create a wide variety of photographs that make us think and try to identify all of the less obvious details that make a photograph ominous. During this project I explored many different ways of getting the specific effect that I wanted. I struggled to decide between many things including whether to shoot in color or black and white, have a model or not, shoot inside or outside or have a mixture of both. In the end I decided to bring multiple elements into my series. I like black and white but decided to have photos with and without models as well as shooting inside and outside.
