Artist Statement
I wanted to approach the field of architectural photography through windows, because I think their underlying purpose is fascinating. Windows allow the viewer to see the “outside” world without having to actually interact with it or form emotional connections. The idea of the “outside” is subjective. I believe that the “outside” can go both ways, as windows allow for viewing both in and out, although reflections ruin proper viewing from one side. Reflections create a different view of reality and what people would traditionally see. They juxtapose views upon buildings that can completely change the whole appearance. Windows provide distance while still maintaining the feeling of closeness. These translucent barriers provide a feeling of safety and comfort, even though they actually expose more than they hide.
In addition to standard, rectangular, man made windows, I wanted to find windows that weren’t traditional. They usually had the pane of glass separating one experience from another, but they were harder to find. Like old tape on the wall of bus stops or architectural beams, these newly framed experiences allow the viewer to see from a new perspective.
